Sample Art Lesson Plan

Culture/Geographical Location:

• Egypt-theme Ancient Civilizations

Project:

• Canopic Clay Jars- fourth grade, project 2

Objective:

Using Egypt as a geographical and culture unit, introduce Egyptian Art. Use this art as a stepping stone to learning artistic skills, cultural specialties and history.

Skills covered during unit:

sculpting, scoring, smoothing, coil, pinch pot, rhythm, design, motif, glazing, form, color, space

Introduction to unit:

• Week 1: Introduce Egyptian Unit. Show PowerPoint presentation, books, slides and visuals to convey Egypt and the ancient culture.

Production:

• Week 2: Introduce CLAY. Demonstrate pinch pot technique. Have children make the base of their Canopic Jar in pinch pot format.
• Week 3: Demonstrate how to mold clay to form top of Canopic Jar. Demonstrate scoring and smoothing technique. Have children work on head of jar.
• Week 4: Continue sculpting.
• Week 5: Process the clay in the kiln after it has dried. Introduce GLAZES. Demonstrates how to glaze. Glaze bottoms of Canopic Jars.
• Week 6: Glaze top of Canopic Jars.
• Week 7: Review and critique finished piece. Use a Art rubric to assess success with project.
• Week 8: Take digital picture. Present disk and written copy to Ms. Guenther.

Technology Integration:

Take pictures for PowerPoint presentations. Do art rubric for both watercolor and for pottery. Do writing rubric.
