Using Lexiled Reading to Integrate Language Arts Literacy Across All Content Areas
TeenBiz3000 is a web-based, reading and writing instructional supplement that differentiates instruction based on the student's Lexile level. Students receive level-appropriate, standards-aligned nonfiction reading/writing assignments via e-mail. Students' levels of comprehension are monitored by a daily formative assessment of students' reading comprehension abilities. TeenBiz also provides teachers and administrators with ongoing management reports and diagnostic data that enable individualized intervention and remediation based on a given student's needs. They provide more time-on-task and more practice, which in turn fosters gains in reading comprehension, fluency, writing skills and vocabulary development across subject areas. TeenBiz provides student-centered instruction that utilizes a five-step process designed and scientifically validated to increase literacy achievement among teenage students. The five step process includes: setting a schema, reading for information, demonstrating mastery (questions monitor comprehension), constructing meaning, and forming an opinion. TeenBiz's assignments, activities and integrated formative assessments are all aligned with state standards and scientifically proven to dramatically accelerate gains in reading levels, vocabulary acquisition, writing ability and high-stakes test scores.

Using Student Response Systems (CPS) in the Classroom
The objective of the session is to provide real-life demonstrations of the Classroom Performance System (CPS), a student response technology. Participants will learn how to integrate a PowerPoint lesson with response questions. Student response questions within a PowerPoint slide show engage students while receiving formative assessment data. The presenter will simulate another lesson using a student response system during chalk and talk time in the classroom. During chalk and talk lecture time, some students raise their hands and offer verbal responses. What about the remaining students? Do they grasp the topic? CPS is an ideal way to receive a response from EVERY student. Chalk and talk is a fundamental lecture technique and is virtually used on a daily basis. Rolling an "on the fly" response question out is one mouse click away and does not require any preparation time. Another way to minimize lesson preparation is to use ExamView question banks with CPS software. ExamView is offered with over 6,000 text books readily available. ExamView integration will be demonstrated. One final demonstration showing how to automate existing paper tests using CPS will be done. During the last part of the session we will analyze reports on individual academic performance and how this can translate into remediation and drastically reduce intervention.

Classroom Acoustics and Student Learning
The workshop offers a study of how a child's learning processes can be impaired by a noisy classroom environment. Children are immature listeners who have to listen more precisely than adults to recognize and comprehend speech. Poor classroom acoustics can contribute to problems with speech perception and interfere with comprehension. Acoustics and classroom amplification systems work together to improve the classroom learning environment. Learning Objectives: Participants will learn how classroom noise affects children's learning processes. Learning is also affected by distance from the teacher, softness of the signal, echoes in the room (reverberation) and interfering noise. At the end of the program, participants will understand that proper sound distribution using classroom amplification systems to complement the acoustical environment will greatly increase scholastic achievement. During the workshop, a combination of PowerPoint and video presentations are used to provide an in-depth overview of how noise in and around the classroom affects learning. Classroom acoustics complemented with classroom amplification work together to increase signal-to-noise ratio and improve student achievement. The program includes a video review showing live classroom footage and commentary from teachers and industry experts.

Smartphones: Efficient, Effective, and Empowering in the Middle School Classroom
Incorporating Smartphone usage in the middle school classroom is a beneficial practice for both students and educators. Smartphone owners have the ability to check e-mail, conduct Internet searches, blog, record audio information, take notes, snap photographs, complete basic math functions, etc. By incorporating Smartphone usage in the middle school classroom, educators are afforded the opportunity to challenge and meet the needs of all students in an innovative manner resulting in a motivating environment where students are engaged in the learning process (Bryant & Hunton, 2000). Currently, eighth grade students in the Emma C. Attales Middle School utilize Smartphones to complete projects in language arts class. The students use their personal cell phones to conduct research, collaborate with peers, blog, maintain a Ning page, take notes on class discussions and literature, and make public presentations. Moreover, the students have used their Smartphones to collaborate with seventh grade special education students to prepare TED Talk presentations. Assessment of student performance is conducted on an informal and formal basis and is provided almost immediately.
