Summary of the Lesson

The first three lessons should be completed in about three weeks. The fourth lesson would be an ongoing activity for most of the school year. You will find that the children will need less help as the year progresses. Consider placing children with partners of mixed ability levels so that the children may benefit from each other’s knowledge.

Save the printed alphabet sheets for each child in a folder to be compiled into a book at the end of the school year.

You should work on the letters in the order that you will be presenting them to the students. This will make the Kid Pix alphabet book project a meaningful reinforcement activity for your language arts program as well as an introduction to computer use.

Equipment, materials and other technology needed

Computer, mouse, keyboard, printer, large screen monitor (if available), Kid Pix Studio Deluxe Software, example of completed alphabet book, computer flashcard pieces (copies provided), classroom management chart (copy provided), student assessment checklist (copy provided).

Detail of Activities

Kindergarten classroom teachers can combine letter and sound recognition with introducing their students to the computer. Classroom teachers are working under many time constraints and being able to integrate the use of technology into their existing curriculum is an efficient use of their classroom time.

Lesson One

Objectives:

Given a mouse, keyboard, monitor and printer, students will
Point to and name each component with 100% accuracy.

Instructional Strategies:

             Small Group Instruction

             Small Group Co-operative Instruction

Materials:

Computer, mouse, keyboard, printer, monitor, Kid Pix Studio Deluxe    software, printer and paper, one set of computer flashcards for each group
