Name: Patricia Carson
School District: Hammonton School District
Title of Lesson: Grammar Shots
Category: 3 to 5
Supporting Materials:
Assessment

Time Required:
Three forty-five minute periods (time requirements are calculated with the availability of four digital cameras and four computers equipped with Microsoft power point)

Short Description:
Students will increase their knowledge of grammar and writing by working in groups of 3 or 4 using a digital camera to illustrate a sentence. They will then incorporate the pictures into power point and create a presentation demonstrating the sentence. The class will view these presentations and try to reconstruct the sentence shown using grammatical clues such as " subject, predicate, phrase, adjective, and adverb.

Behavioral Objective:
Given a digital camera, a sentence, and access to a computer with Microsoft Power Point the students will be able to work with a group to create a presentation illustrating the sentence so that their classmates can reconstruct the sentence meaning. The students will be able to give clues such as subject, predicate, phrase, adjective, or adverb to help their classmates reconstruct the sentence.

Student's Background:
Students will need to be able to: know how to take pictures with a digital camera, know how to import pictures into Microsoft Power Point, know how to animate the power point presentation so that it will run on its own, be able to identify the subject, predicate, phrase, adjective and adverbs in a sentence.

Materials Needed:
Digital Camera (one that saves pictures to floppy disc saves having to download the pictures before using them), index cards or sentence strips containing the sentences, computer with Microsoft Power Point loaded, Houghton Mifflin English copyright 1982, classwork sheet to work on if a group must wait for a turn on the computer, and homework sheet.

Procedures:
Before the lesson, prepare six sentence strips or index cards containing the following sentences. One of these will be distributed to each group.

1.      The tall girl played baseball in the schoolyard.

2.      The children jumped over the rope.

3.      Two boys walked the dog down the hallway.

4.      The teacher wrote the assignment on the chalkboard.

5.      Mary sits behind Susan

6.      The girl typed her report on the computer.

Day 1

Divide the class into six group of four each. (Grouping may be adjusted according to the size of the class but try to keep the size of the groups to no more than five per group)  5 Minutes

Briefly review the parts of a sentence. (Subject, Predicate, Direct Objects Phrases, Adjectives, Adverbs) Have the English books on hand so that the groups can refer to them. 20 minutes

Students choose their sentence and meet in their groups.  They identify and mark each part of their sentence. The teacher checks this. Then the group plans their pictures and arranges any necessary props. 20 minutes

Day 2

Review use of the digital camera. 10 minutes

Groups meet and take pictures. Instructor will need to rotate among groups to help where needed. (If there are not enough digital cameras for all groups to use at one time an assignment should be given in which students compose their own sentence and then illustrate it in frames to create a flip book.  They can work on this while they wait for their turn with the cameras and then finish it for homework) 35 minutes

Day 3

Review importing pictures into Power Point and creating automatic presentations.  5 minutes

Groups create their Power Point presentations. 20 minutes

Each group presents their presentation to the class and the class reconstructs the sentence as closely as possible. 20 minutes (this process can be made easier if the teacher lists the original sentences on the board)

Follow- up:
Choose one of the sentences illustrated and create a story using the sentence as a starting point. Illustrate the story. (This can be a homework assignment or can be done as a class assignment the next day.

Assessment:
The group Power point presentations will serve as assessment for the lesson. A rubric will be used to evaluate the presentation taking into consideration how well the presentation helps the class to reconstruct the sentence.
