Betty Garrity & Rosemary Fedon, Galloway Township Middle School Goals and Objectives of the Lesson with NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards: Goals: Students will: · gain a better understanding of the roots of prejudice & the tragedy of genocide · realize the importance of courage in the face of injustice · appreciate the value of individual actions of heroism · develop computer skills to create an effective multimedia presentation Instructional Objectives: Students will be able to: · apply research skills to create a documentary ( Language Arts Literacy - 3.4.25) · develop an appreciation of the courage and heroic spirit of children of the Holocaust (Social Studies - 6.2,6.3,6.4.8) · use persuasive writing techniques (Language Arts Literacy - 3.3) · write reflective journal entries from poetry readings and viewing art work (Language Arts Literacy - 3.3, 3.5.13-14,3.4.25, 1.5) · develop interviewing skills (Language Arts Literacy - 3.1,3.3) · will use speculative writing (Language Arts Language Arts Literacy - 3.3) · use public speaking skills (Language Arts Literacy - 3.1) · identify the various historical, social, and cultural influences of the Holocaust which have generated artistic accomplishments (Visual & Performing Arts - 1.5) Summary of the Lesson: The students worked in groups to gather information about the Holocaust from a variety of sources including books, Internet web sites, and videos. They used this information to create a multimedia documentary of the Children of the Holocaust using Microsoft PowerPoint. They included audio and video clips as well as scanned images into their presentation. They presented their documentaries to their classmates. Rev ed Garden City, NY: Doubleday, 1967. · Videos Clips from : The Diary of Anne Frank, Anne Frank Remembered, Forget Me Not · Microsoft PowerPoint · Paint Software Program · Internet Site developed by Betty Garrity: http://www.gtps.k12.nj.us/schools/gtms/garrityb/webquest Detail of Activities: The students completed the following activities through the WebQuest listed above: Activity 1: Holocaust Overview Students completed a KWL form describing what they knew, what they wanted to know, and what they learned about the Holocaust. They visited the following webs site to gather some background information: http://www.candles-museum.com/holocaus.htm Activity 2: Holocaust Scenes Students worked in groups to select 3 sites related to the Holocaust from the following web sites: http://remember.org/jacobs/index.html http://www.remember.org/camps/birkenau/bir-list.html http://www.remember.org/camps/mauthausen/mau-list.html Each student wrote a journal entry based on A GEPA-like writing to speculate prompt. Activity 3: Forget Me Not Cards Each student selected a child of the Holocaust from the site: http://www.graceproducts.com/fmnc/main.htm Next, they wrote a journal entry describing what the child was like just by looking at the picture. Then they researched biographical information about their child and wrote a summary. Activity 4: Childrens Poems Each student selected a poem from the book, ...I never saw another butterfly Children's Drawings and Poems from Terezin Concentration Camp 1942-1944. Students wrote journal entries describing their reaction to the poem. Activity 5: Childrens Art Work Each student selected a piece of artwork from the book, ...I never saw another butterfly Children's Drawings and Poems from Terezin Concentration Camp 1942-1944. Students wrote a journal response for one of the works. They were asked to discuss why they thought a child who was imprisoned during the Holocaust would draw such a picture. Activity 6: Anne Frank Each student researched information about Anne Frank by reading excerpts of the book, Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl and by using the web site: http://www.annefrank.com/site/af_life/1_life.htm Students wrote a biographical sketch of her life. Activity 7: The Secret Annex Students created a scale drawing of the Secret Annex based on dimensions given to them from the Children of the Holocaust WebQuest. (To be completed after GEPA) Activity 8: Musical Selections Students selected songs from the Schindlers List CD to include in their documentary Activity 9: Putting It All Together Students worked in groups to develop a PowerPoint presentation including parts from the activities described above. Activity 10: Presentation Students presented their documentaries to their classmates.
Student Feedback & Assessment Sample Student Responses to the Student Feedback Form: 1. What did you like most about this activity? Why? · I liked making stories and poems about our children that we picked from the Holocaust. · Doing it on PowerPoint because its fun and a lot more interesting than doing a normal, plain project. Also its interesting to find new things out. · I know more about the Holocaust How they suffered their feelings · Reading childrens poems and viewing their artwork. It was interesting to see that most children drew pictures of happy things. · Using computers I like computers · It was fun using computers and working with partners. · I liked to learn about the Holocaust the best because I didnt know that much about it and I wanted to learn more. This helped me learn more. 2. What did you most dislike about it? Why? · It was hard to picture the Holocaust scenes. · Not enough computer lab time. · Nothing I liked everything. · It was a lot of work. · I dont like to find some people die at Holocaust. Because is very sad to talk about that. 3. How would you improve it? · Give more time · Make one PowerPoint Slide on Hitler and the Nazis · It is fine the way it is · Include adults too · Have more activities using childrens art work · Find some people alive from the Holocaust 4. How easy or difficult was the research? Why? · It was easy because all good web sites were given to us. · Easy I knew a lot from last year. 5. Would you change, add, delete anything on your project now that you have given your presentation? Why? · Nothing, because it was good. · No, we worked hard · Nothing, everything turned out great. · I would explain the pictures more. · I would add to the conclusion because it should be better on such a serious topic. · I would have no music because it drowned out my speaking part. 6. Which would you prefer: 1) Writing a report? 2) Doing a presentation? Why? Doing a Presentation 85% · It is much better, more fun, and writing a report makes it very boring and plain. · More interactive technology · It is much easier and kids get the idea better. They pay more attention. · It is more hands on and I like working with computers. · More people would want to see it. · You can express your skills better and its less writing. · It teachers you people skills. It prepares you for the future, because you will probably have to give a presentation sooner or later. · I hate to do reports. Writing a report 15% · It is easier for me. · I can spend a lot of time on it and work at home. 7.Would you like to do another WebQuest on a different topic? If yes, what topic? Yes 60% Other suggested topics: Different places around the world, Independence of India, helicopters, slavery, evolution of technology, sports, each student chooses their own topic 8. What did you learn as a result of doing this WebQuest? · The research I got made me realize I shouldnt take anything for granted and how good I have it. · I learned that the Holocaust was worse than I thought. I knew it was bad. I didnt know how bad. · I am sad. I think we need to work for peace and not let this happen again. · That many people and children died for no reason only because they were Jewish.. · Hitler was a bad person. · How to make graphics on the computer and use a scanner. · Many childrens work was published, not just Anne Frank · How hard it was for Anne Frank and the other children of the Holocaust.
