1. Goals and Objectives of Lesson: a. Identify and analyze priceless treasures belonging to the Romanov dynasty of czars in Russia.
b. Compare and contrast accomplishments of czars.
c. Analyze elements of newspaper story concerning Czar Nicholas.
d. Examine life in present day Russia.
2. NJ Core Curriculum Contents Standards Addressed: Social Studies Proposed Standards 6.2 (Indicators 1-4), 6.3 (Indicators 2,7,1 1), and 6.4 (Indicators 3-5).
3. Summary of the Lesson: The class took a virtual reality tour of a Topeka, Kansas museum hosting an exhibit of Russian czarist treasures. Besides viewing the exhibit and accompanying information, the students examined the history of the Romanov dynasty as well as the Russia of today.
4. Equipment, materials, and other technology needed: A computer (with monitor) With Internet capabilities, and teacher-prepared materials containing instructions and questions.
5. Detail of activities-. a. Class will observe pictures in the above mentioned museum exhibit and use the pictures and accompanying text to answer some teacher-prepared questions.
b. Class will use a timeline in the site to answer questions about
the Romanovs.
c. Class will read a newspaper article on site concerning the DNA analysis of bones purported to be Czar Nicholas's and his family and break down its components to locate the Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How of the article.
d. Using an article and viewing a slide show of photos of present day Russia on site, class will construct paragraphs offering their opinions.
6, Student Feedback and Assessment: Students will be evaluated based on accuracy,
depth of analysis, and sophistication of mechanics within their written papers.
Welcome to Treasures of the Czars
You will be visiting a museum in Topeka, Kansas to tour an exhibit of the
personal treasures of 'ust a few of the most famous of Russia's czars, and to answer
questions about the exhibit. You will also learn a bit of history about the Romanovs'
Dynasty (and answer some questions) including reading an article about the recovery of
the bones of the last czar and his family. Finally, you will view a slide show of modem
day Russia (mostly Moscow, the capital city). So let's begin with some basic instructions
about finding the site.

3. A chart with 12 boxes of information will appear on your screen. Click "The
Romanovs."
4. Answer the following questions with your partner.
a. What span of years did the Romanovs rules
b. Who was the first czar in the dynasty?
c. Who was the last czar?
d. How many czars were women'? Name them.
e. Pick any 2 Romanov czars and identify two of their accomplishments.
f Following the execution of the last czar, what form of government did Russia adopt?
