Technology in the Classroom
Lesson Plan Contest
Background: The Atlantic County ETTC encourages the creative incorporation
of technology in the classroom to infuse the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content
Standards (NJ CCCS). The ETTC wishes to build on the many exciting ideas and
resources available today in Atlantic County, and also wants to foster the growth
of new ideas on how technology fits in K-12 education. The winners of this contest
will provide the ETTC and their colleagues with valuable models to follow!

Deadline: April 24, 1998. No late submissions will be considered.
Winners will be announced at our Turnkey Trainer Certification Ceremony at
the Performing Arts Center at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey in
early May. Winning entries will be posted on the ETTC website.
Prizes: We have received exciting gift certificates from several businesses
in this area, and we aim to provide a grand prize of a digital camera!
Contest Rules:
- The entry can be a lesson plan covering one or more days of instruction;
an instruction unit covering several days of instruction; or a thematic project.
- The entry must have been taught prior to submission.
- The entry must include a completed Application Form.
- The entry should include the use of technology in the classroom which may
include but is NOT limited to the Internet, CD-ROMs, educational
software, video or distance learning technologies.
- The entry must reflect original work by the participant, rather than the
reflection of existing projects from national foundations or software companies.
- The contest will be run in 4 categories one entry can be submitted
to only one category:
- Category 1: Instruction suitable for Grades Pre-K through 2
- Category 2: Instruction suitable for Grades 3 through 5
- Category 3: Instruction suitable for Grades 6 through 8
- Category 4: Instruction suitable for Grades 9 through 12
- The entry must be submitted in both hardcopy and electronic form. Three
hard copies of the entry, including the Application Form, must be provided.
The electronic version can be submitted on PC or Macintosh disks in a format
readable by Microsoft Word, Word Perfect, Claris Works or other popular software
packages. (Call the ETTC with specific software questions.) The entry, and
other written documentation should be in Times New Roman font, 12 point size
with no italics (to facilitate the computer scanning process).
- Any individual school teacher or other school district employee in Atlantic
County may submit entries to this contest.
- An individual can submit more than one entry to this contest.
- Participants may provide one copy of supporting materials such as videotapes,
CD-ROMs, etc. Supporting materials can be picked up at the Atlantic County
ETTC after judging is complete.
- Participants agree to give the Atlantic County ETTC rights to reproduce
the entries for distribution to other districts and posting on the ETTC website.
Judging Criteria
The following section lists discussion questions for the judges as they consider
contest entries. Please note that entries are not expected to answer all
of the following questions!
- Creative Use of Technology in the Classroom : 50% of score
Effective Use of Technology: Is the technology used effectively and
creatively? Does the use of technology contribute concretely to the learning
process? Can the lesson be adapted easily if the technology used becomes obsolete?
Clarity: Does the entry stand on its own? Is the entry understandable
to a teacher reading it for the first time who wants to conduct this instruction
in his / her own class?
Adaptability / Practicality : Is the lesson easily reproducible in
another teachers classroom? Is it practical to implement in terms of
technical requirements and know-how? Is it adaptable to students with special
needs?
- Support of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards : 50%
of score
Relevance to the Standards: Is it clear which of the NJ CCCS are
addressed and how? Does this entry contribute to the process of incorporating
the standards in instruction?
Pedagogical soundness: Does the entry clearly indicate what students
will learn? Is the learning process clear and effective? How creative is
the instructional plan?
Assessment issues: Is it clear how student performance is assessed?
