Detail of Activities

A guest speaker from a local marketing firm will make a small presentation to the students. The presentation will focus on Marketing in the future, including advertising and public relations trends. The presentation will also include a short segment on how to market the "Falcon Sprout". In class students will follow-up by brainstorming and discussing their own

Marketing strategies for the project. Students will photograph floral designs using a digital camera and utilize photo editing software, Adobe Photo Deluxe, to maximize picture quality, etc. If a digital camera is not available, a 35 mm camera can be used, and the pictures can then be scanned. Pictures will then be printed on 8 ½ X 11 photo paper, and placed in poly protectors and finally in a portfolio. (see attached handout)

The end result in this phase of the project is a portfolio of products that are numbered and priced, which will be used as a selling tool. Students will visit various web sites to begin collecting ideas for creating their site, i.e., http://excite.netscape.com/shopping/flower/ Students will create a web site using thumbnail photos of various floral design samples, along with pricing.

The final Web Page will allow students, faculty, parents, friends and relatives to use the Internet as their "catalog" to view the product or services and place orders. (see attached handout) It is important at this stage to advertise the web site via flyers and/or letters home to parents. Students from various other classes will have an opportunity to share in this project during this phase. Greeting cards will be made to accompany floral designs. "Creative Writing" classes will be asked to compose short phrases for various occasions. After the best phrases are selected, "Advanced Art" students will create original artwork to be photographed and/or scanned and used along with the phrases.

Next, Spanish IV students will translate the phrases to Spanish as to attract the large number of Hispanic speaking students. Any of these art designs and/or phrases can be transferred to a T-shirt, which would also advertise the "Falcon Sprout". This phase of the project requires much coordination on the students’ part, however, the end resulting product will be unique and inexpensive to create. Finally, students will do a marketing analysis of sales before and after the implementation of the marketing tools created in this project using MS Excel and bar graphing. (see sample attached)

Student Feedback and Assessment

Assessment will be ongoing, and as with most technology-related projects, drafts are important. Students should be asked to keep a time log of work their work, along with drafts of all finished products they create. If they are working with a group of students, this should be noted in the log. This can all be kept in a three-ring binder or portfolio of their own.

Additional comments and suggestions

In this lesson plan floral designs are used as the product to be marketed, however, this can be substituted by school store products, logoed items, fundraiser items… Also, there are many different web design and desktop publishing software, which can be substituted for the ones mentioned. Finally, this project should be an ongoing effort. Each year students can add, change or enhance the marketing efforts created by the previous class, and each year an analysis can be done to determine their success.Computer Applications IV Floral Design Marketing Project Phase 3 – Web Site   Begin by visiting various sites for ideas on how to create a Web Site for the "Falcon Sprout".
