ETTC Turnkey Training Program guide

1997-1998 School Year

ETTC activities will focus this year on a formal turnkey training program to infuse technology into the curriculum in support of the NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards. The ETTC has scheduled 36 sessions of turnkey training for county teachers. Every teacher that completes the turnkey training program will be certified as an ETTC Turnkey Instructor, and will train colleagues in their home district in the material that they have learned.

Training Sessions

The turnkey training program consists of three training sessions which are designed to be taken in order – termed as Turnkey Training Sessions I, II and III. Sessions I and II are available separately on Mac and PC platforms, to serve the needs of the districts’ installed technology base. (Session III on the Mac platform will be scheduled based on demand.) Each session runs from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm., with a half-hour break for lunch. The sessions will be held at locations throughout the county.

Each session is expected to hold 20 students, though this may change depending on the hosting site’s capability.

Choosing your Turnkey Instructors

The ETTC recommends that school districts follow the criteria below when choosing their turnkey teachers:

  1. The teacher should have at least minimal experience with computers, especially with the use of a mouse. Knowledge of Windows or the Internet is helpful, but not required.
  2. The teacher should be enthusiastic about and interested in the use of technology in the classroom.
  3. The teacher should be willing to train his or her colleagues upon return to their school district
  4. The teacher should have patience and understanding when introducing technology to novices.
  5. The set of turnkey teachers should reflect the range of grade levels and subjects in your district, and should also reflect participation from different schools within the district.

ETTC support for Turnkey Instructors

Each teacher must complete Turnkey Training Sessions I and II before he or she can be certified as an ETTC turnkey instructor. Upon certification, each teacher will be provided with materials and support to guide them upon return to their district, including:

  1. Copies of instruction manuals and handouts for 10 of their colleagues.
  2. Technical assistance from the ETTC and its partners.
  3. A ‘alumni’ network for mentoring and peer-group collaboration conducted over email and the web.
  4. On-site assistance for turnkey sessions to be made available based on demand and ETTC resources.
  5. The ETTC will formally recognize the achievement of the turnkey trainers at a certificate awards ceremony. The school district may recognize the turnkey trainers at local ceremonies as well.

Turnkey Training Structure

The ETTC recommends the following structure when turnkey trainers return to their home district:

  • Each Turnkey Instructor will be responsible for conducting 10 hours of instruction at their home district for 10 of their colleagues. (This corresponds to five after-school sessions of two hours each, for example.)
  • The turnkey trainers and school district, with assistance from the ETTC, will determine the assignment of 10 colleagues per turnkey instructor so as to ensure successful broad-based dissemination.
  • Turnkey training can be completed after-school or during school hours -- the timing and structure of the turnkey training will be determined within the school district.
  • Completed feedback forms on turnkey training sessions and attendance records should be provided to the ETTC upon completion of the turnkey project.

Registration Logistics

Step 1: Choose your district’s turnkey trainers:

  • Each district would provide the ETTC with a list of its Turnkey Instructors, based on the slot allocation table above. An individual would not be certified as a Turnkey Instructor until after they have completed Turnkey Training Sessions I and II.
  • Districts will not be charged separately for the turnkey training for the teachers designated based on the slot allocation above.
  • Your district may choose to send additional teachers to the training sessions using the fee structure described below.

Step 2: Register your teachers for the session dates:

  • Training Session I must be taken before Training Session II. Training Session II must be taken before Training Session III.
  • Platforms should remain consistent: all PC or all Macintosh.

Rules for Scheduling

Registration will be on a first-come first-served basis, with the following rules applying:

  1. Preference will be given to designated Turnkey Instructors as established by each district (see Step 1 above).
  2. In order to bring teachers from different districts together, the first five teachers from a district for a given workshop date will be registered directly. Additional teachers from the same district for the same workshop date will be placed on a waiting list. Two weeks before the class date, the waiting list will be used to fill any open seats. (Note that, due to time constraints, the first few training sessions may not be able to follow this procedure.)
  3. A district can register additional teachers beyond the slot allocation through a payment of $100 per teacher per training session. (The estimated value of these training sessions is $250.) These teachers will be placed on the waiting list until 2 weeks prior to the class date, and then registered for any open seats.
  4. Participants who are unable to attend a session may send a substitute. The substitute should be an employee of the same district when possible. Note however, that the same individual must take Training Sessions I and II in order to be certified as an ETTC Turnkey Instructor.
  5. Registrants will be notified by fax of the location of the session.
  6. The ETTC website (http://www.stockton.edu/~ettc) will provide daily updates on available seats for each session, hosting sites, locations and schedule changes. Please check the site frequently.

Participation from non-public schools

Non-public schools that are members of the ETTC consortium, and have paid the per-student assessment fee, receive turnkey training slots in the same manner as public schools. (Interested non-public schools should contact the ETTC.) Consortium members can also send additional teachers to the turnkey training sessions by providing the per-teacher payment of $100 per training session mentioned above.

Non-public schools that are not members of the ETTC consortium can send teachers to the turnkey training program at a per-teacher cost of $250 (the estimated value of the training).
