South Jersey Coastal Consortium

Using the natural environs of the South Jersey coastal region as a backdrop, the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey has designed a three-year initiative that provides eligible high-need local education agencies with tools to promote student achievement and with comprehensive professional development activities to yield “highly qualified” teachers in the content areas of mathematics and science in grades three to eight.   Through exploration of mathematics and science topics to enrich their knowledge and understanding of the content, participating teachers will enhance their teaching skills, ultimately leading to improved student achievement.

The college’s Southern Regional Institute for Professional Development (SRI) and Educational Technology Training Center (ETTC) directs an interdisciplinary team of faculty from the Master of Arts in Education Program (MAED), the Master of Arts in Instructional Technology Program (MAIT), and the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics that provides opportunities for teachers in grades 3-8 opportunities to enhance their content knowledge in mathematics and technology and science and technology (Technological Literacy standards 8.1 and 8.2); meet the NCLB federal definition of Highly Qualified Teachers; and/or receive undergraduate or graduate hours of academic credit toward the attainment of the New Jersey Teacher of Elementary School with Subject Matter Specialization certificate” (NJDOE).

Activities are held year round and include summer institutes, school year workshops, in-class coach mentoring, opportunities to learn from practitioners in the community, participation in a virtual community and an infiltration of technology as a tool to enhance instruction and learning.
