Summer Institute Year 3 (August 3 - August 14, 2009)

The 2009 MSP summer institute will focus upon topics in earth science, specifically biogeochemical cycles. The emphasis on biogeochemical cycles will build upon the 2007 MSP summer institute on life science and the 2008 MSP summer institute on energy transformation. The curriculum is aligned to the content standards as defined by the NJCCCS and the NAEP Framework.

The understanding of biogeochemical cycles and the relationship to living systems will be the basis for developing possible solutions to environmental issues. Through problem based learning, participants will investigate this connection and explore possible solutions to a particular environmental challenge. Participants will also develop their own problem based learning based upon their own curriculum.

Climate Change Seen as Threat to U.S. Security

Using the natural environs of the coastal region as a backdrop, the South Jersey Coastal Consortium will guide participating teachers through a 3-year exploration of mathematics and science topics that will enrich their knowledge and understanding of the content and enhance their teaching skills, ultimately leading to improved student achievement.
