Lighthouse - Cohansey Light, Greenwich, Delaware Bay The first lighthouse near the mouth of Cohansey Creek on the Delaware bay was built in 1838. "The light house illuminated 270 degrees of the horizon; it is in the 5th order , fixed white and is 45 feet above mean high water." (1)It is SAid that the lighthouse burned eleven laterns. A report from William D. Porter of the U.S. navy stated that tyhe light house was extremly poorly kept. The walls were crumbling anf the cistern leaked.(LH)
By 1883, the new Cohansey Lighthouse was built. This new building was a white frame structure with green shutters, topped with a black square tower. The new house contained six rooms. Water was supplied by four storage tanks, two iorn and two wood. These collected the rain form the roof. The house rested on wooden beams, which rested on iron piles. It was equipped with a 5th order Frensel lens. Its light shoed 42 feet above mean high water.
