Acrollage, the medium Calero invented, can be described as "a mixed media combination of acrylic and paper."(2) Unique patterns and ordinary objects are mixed together to create beautiful symbolic images in her paintings. By blending elements that offer open-ended interpretations, she conveys ideas and feelings with an emotional involvement. Her techniques involve "layering glazes of luminous colors with encapsulating rice and imaged paper."(2)
The painting above, titled Transfiguration, was created in 2001. The title references the "historical event when God became present in Christ's body, which occurred as Christ left his followers to pray."(3) Calero is not only a painter but a multi-media artist who also creates drawings, prints, and collages, many of which utilize acrylic paints. She is happy because her method allows her to search and experiment with new ideas every day.
