Bull
Kuhn Brigantine Races.
The Atlantic City Beach Patrol doubled its efforts to win the 38th annual
Chief Bill Kuhn Brigantine Bay Races on Sunday.
Chuck Gowdy and Mike Dougherty doubled up in their events. Dougherty
finished second to Brigantine's Sven Peltonen in the paddleboard, and
Dougherty and Gowdy then won the doubles. Gowdy went on to win the singles
row in the final event.
Atlantic City captured first with 136 points. Ventnor took second with
87.
Brigantine was third with 63 and Margate fourth with 40. Defending
champion Longport was fifth and last with 34 points.
It is the only event of the South Jersey Chiefs Association season held
on
the bay.
"It was pretty tough to compete race after race," Dougherty
said. "I
wasn't expecting to do that well in the doubles after the paddleboard
race. There are very good paddlers and very good rowers here."
A number of racers competed in multiple events, and the calm waters of
the
bay made that especially tough. In open-water races, competitors ride
the
waves in for the last leg of their races.
"(Bay racing) really takes it out of you, especially at the end when
there
are no waves to carry you in. Its just straight all the way through the
finish line," Dougherty said.
"I was surprised how well we did in the singles. Especially after
the
doubles because Chuck (Gowdy) had to carry me. He was probably the best
guy out here today."
Atlantic City's John Kenny won the 3/4-mile swim in 11 minutes 33 seconds,
beating teammate Jon Stinson by 27 seconds.
"It was very physical out there for the first 100 yards ... but I
got
through it and it was pretty much smooth sailing from there," Kenny
said.
Peltonen who won the paddleboard event for the ninth time in 10 years,
was
impressed by the field.
"A lot of guys doubled up today and that's a real tough thing to
do,
especially for Dougherty. He came right back to row after the paddleboard
with no rest in between," Peltonen said. "Today gave a good
indication of
the quality of lifeguards we have around here."
